The Department

About the Department

The department was established in 1976 after the division of the Department of Veterinary Medicine & Surgery. Over time, its name evolved according to guidelines from the Veterinary Council of India. It offers:

  • M.V.Sc. programme (since 1964–65)
  • Ph.D. programme (since 1994–95)

  • The department is actively involved in teaching, research, extension, and clinical services. It provides advanced training and research facilities in:

  • Semen Biology
  • Embryo Biotechnology
  • Handling and treatment of reproductive problems in animals

  • It also transfers scientific knowledge to livestock owners through extension activities such as animal welfare camps, farmer meetings, radio talks, and ATIC etc. Thus emphasizes a balanced approach combining classroom instruction, practical training, field exposure, modern technology, and communication skill development to prepare competent veterinary professionals.

    Mission

To improve the reproductive efficiency of farm animals for sustainable production, strengthen the nation's economy, support livestock-based livelihoods, and produce skilled undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral professionals in animal reproduction

    Mandates

  • Develop academic, research, and extension skills of UG, PG, and Ph.D. students in animal reproduction.
  • Conduct innovative research in Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics aligned with government priorities.
  • Develop new reproductive technologies beneficial to livestock farmers.
  • Create awareness among farmers regarding reproductive management of livestock.
  • Provide emergency clinical services through the Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex (TVCC) and contribute to extension activities.

  • Important Research Work

The Department of Veterinary Gynaecology & Obstetrics is actively engaged in advanced research in animal reproduction and biotechnology. Major ongoing and completed projects include:

  • Multiplication and conservation of elite Sahiwal cows at IDF, Nagla using Multiple Ovulation and Embryo Transfer (MOET) technology.
  • Conservation of elite Badri cows through Ovum Pick-Up–In Vitro Fertilization (OPU-IVF) and animal cloning techniques.
  • Standardization and development of Indigenous semen sexing technology and use of sex-sorted semen in Sahiwal cows to improve conception rates.
  • Research on bovine infertility, including:
    1. Enhancing uterine involution using herbal therapies.
    2. Improving conceptionin repeat breeder using uterine immuno-modulators.
    3. Reducing the postpartum period in dairy cows through therapeutic interventions.

  • Achievements

    Achievements

    Research Highlights

  • The department pioneered embryo transfer research in rabbits and goats in 1976.
  • Early studies on surgical transfer of goat embryos achieved a 63.5% survival rate, and goat embryos were successfully frozen using 2.0 M DMSO.
  • Super-ovulation studies in buffaloes were conducted using PMSG (Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin).
  • Advanced work on Embryo Transfer Technology (ETT) led to successful super-ovulation, non-surgical embryo collection, and embryo transfer in Sahiwal and crossbred cows, resulting in the birth of several calves, including seven calves from a single donor cow.
  • Extensive research has been carried out on: In-Vitro Maturation (IVM), In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF), In-Vitro Culture (IVC), Sperm capacitation, Embryo cryopreservation and vitrification
  • The department established ultrasound-guided transvaginal ovum pick-up (OPU) in Sahiwal cows and successfully produces embryos through IVM-IVF-IVC technologies.
  • A landmark achievement was the birth of “Saubhagya”, India's first buffalo calf produced through OPU technology, born on 28 September 2008 at Pantnagar University.
  • Preliminary studies, for development of indigenous sperm sexing have yielded promising results with nearly 90% enrichment of Xand Yspermatozoawithout detectable cytotoxicity ordeterioration of semen quality, supporting the feasibility of developing a practical indigenous sperm sexing technology.
  • An Animal Cloning Laboratory has been established, and efforts are underway to produce cloned Badri calves using handmade cloning techniques.
  • Successful pregnancies have been achieved through OPU-IVF technology for the conservation of elite Badri cows.

  • The department contributing in embryo transfer, IVF, OPU technology, development of indigenous semen sexing, animal cloning, and infertility management of animals, playing a pioneering role in advancing reproductive biotechnology and the conservation of indigenous cattle breeds and is a leading centre for teaching, research, clinical services, and extension activities in animal reproduction as well as providing strong support to farmers and livestock development programme.
