About the Department

HISTORY

Department of Livestock Production Management was established in 2000 with a mandate to conduct teaching & research in the area of livestock production and management. The department has so far produced 108 PG and 33 Ph.D. students. The department has developed Pantja breed of Goat and Uttara breed of chicken in 2015 and 2018, respectively. The department has 3 AICRPs on Goat, Sahiwal & Uttara in operation. The department is running 4 degree programmes in M V Sc & Ph D in Livestock Production Management and Poultry Science.

    Salient Achievements at LPM Department:

    Breeds developed/ registered

    1. Uttarakhand’s first livestock breed Pantja registered in 2015. A new dual purpose goat breed “PANTJA” identified, improved and was registered (Accession No. INDIA_GOAT_2420_PANTJA_06024).


    2. Uttarakhand’s first chicken breed Uttara was registered in 2018 (Accession No. India_ Chicken_ 2400_Uttara_12019).




    Technologies developed-

    1. Kids’ brooding chamber to reduce morbidity &mortality from extreme cold weather


    2. Kids’ cradle for protection from predators


    3. Elevated platform in the night shelter for protection from parasites and dampness


    4. Sleeping benches in the open paddock for resting during daytime


    5. Dual goat feeders to reduce feed wastage
